Earth Charter

Earth Charter logo
The Earth Charter is a set of ethical commitments designed to guide governments in building a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society. It is a vision of hope, a standard of critique and a call to action. The Earth Charter began as a United Nations backed initiative and has now been taken on by a coalition of civil society groups around the world. The Charter has been endorsed by over 6,000 organizations, including many governments and international organizations.

We, the undersigned, call on local governments in the Capital Region to endorse the Earth Charter – demonstrating a shared commitment to sustainable communities and a sustainable world founded on the principles of (1) respect and care for the community of life; (2) ecological integrity; (3) social and economic justice; and (4) democracy, non-violence and peace.

  • Without community commitment for respect for the environmental integrity to stop climate change and plans for climate change mitigation, citizens will suffer, as will our children and grandchildren.
